What is a Shaman?

Over the years, there has been increasing interest in shamanism, shamans and shamanic healing. I welcome all questions regarding this because it is so dear to my heart. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to get in touch with me.

My background is Hawaiian shamanism. I feel it is important to voice this as I don't feel it is appropriate for you to consider myself the voice of all shamanism.

Shaman's differ depending on the country, cultural backgrounds and beliefs of the shaman. At the core of all shamanism and shamanic beliefs is an innate connection to nature, and oneness. They have powerful healing and psychic abilities, having the ability to channel huge amounts of light.  They are also able to see people on multiple levels, nothing can be hidden from a true shaman. They have the ability to see you, more deeply than you can see yourself, but they are never judgmental or unkind. Their life-calling and purpose is to facilitate healing that is often termed as miraculous. I have seen this happen on many occasions.

Often people associate shaman's with the use of drums, rattles and plant medicines, but not all shaman's use these tools. These tools have an ability to open portals and induce trance states that assist when journeying with the soul. Not all shaman's find these necessary, again, it depends on the background of the shaman and the abilities of the shaman.

A shaman is someone who is in constant communion with nature, with spirit and with multiple realms of Source. A shaman does not work with the mind, as much as he or she works with spirit and soul.  The power and energy of a shaman can be very intense, opening huge portals of light for healing. For this reason, shaman's are often acknowledged and known as medicine men and women. They have the ability to heal deep wounds in the soul, in the body and in the mind. They are able to detach and heal dark and shadow energy that causes great suffering. In some cultures, it is the role of the shaman to remove curses and dark magic. This is done through holding light and love with such purity that the attachment is also healed. A true shaman does not ever work with lower vibrations, the energy of fear. This has no power. A true shaman is one that only communes with the energy of love, grace, compassion and forgiveness. This is all done through the holy light of unconditional love.

Being a shaman is not an easy path, and this role needs to be honoured and respected. As a shaman myself, I can see huge amounts  of light and beings of light, but I can also see the dark. During my work, I work with my beautiful clients to remove darknes from them. This is not easy, and we never elicit fear.

Shaman's are often quite introverted and keep to themselves. This is because they often have to recalibrate their energy after healings, and need time alone to assist with their own energey healing. However, they have a deep love for people and everything that is. In my experience, shaman's are very humble and gentle. Often they 'hear' the voices of nature, the wind, the earth, the fire ... It is a beautiful experience to be a shaman!

How does someone become a shaman in contemporary western society?

Honestly, I feel that shamanism cannot be taught, especially in the west where the focus is often on training through the mind, rather than a deep connection with nature, soul and spirit. My heart often drops when I see shamanism taught in classrooms, with white boards and through lectures.

Shamanism, and being a shaman is something that is woven into your soul, an accumulated wisdom and relationship with oneness that has been cultivated and crafted over lifetimes. When a person is awakened by spirit in this lifetime to their shamanic gifts, it is opening the treasures of their own soul and awakening a previously

anesthetised state. With modern-day shamans, we simply remember and awaken to who we are, because of who we have been before.

Although there is a lot of western training to be a shaman available, personally, I find these are often not a reflection of what it truly means to be a shaman. The 'training' that occurs on land, in oneness and direct communication with nature / spirit is different from this.

If you are meant to be a shaman, you will feel it in your soul. You will have a deep understanding that the way you percieve and 'be' in the world is unique. For some of my mentees, they are walking a shamanic path. I do not teach my mentees, I leave that role for spirit, but I do guide them and support them. Especially when it comes to integrating their spiritual gifts and their humaness. We cannot by-pass anything.

It was not my intention to become a shaman. In all honesty, I didn't know what a shaman was until I had been doing this work for  years. When other people began to call me a shaman, I began to look more closely. The truth is, spirit had been teaching me the role of shamanic connection, rituals, plant medicines, soul retrievals and healings for years, without using the title the of shaman. When I asked my spirit guides if this title was relevant to me, they laughed 'of course it is', they replied.

Over the years, spirit guides have taught me and will continue to teach me and awaken me within the realms of shamanism and shamanic healing. This has been scary at times, but ultimately I feel so grateful to be on this path.
